Chinatown
About Chinatown
Chinatown started small. Le Fong founded the first business, a laundry in 1871. It was located at 913 Race Street. Until the middle 60’s, it only contained a limited number of shops and restaurants centered around Race Street. The Vine Street Expressway and the Pennsylvania Convention Center cut into the real estate boundaries of Chinatown. The Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation was formed in 1968 in part to prevent further encroachment of this sort. It gave members of the community more say over local development. They were instrumental in stopping a ballpark for the Philadelphia Phillies from being built in a portion of Chinatown.
Chinatown may not have many luxury homes, but the real estate here is hard to beat for charm and location.
